History of MLEditor

MLEditor 1.8 (March 2010)

1. [Key feature upgrade: file/folder character/word count] A major upgrade of this feature made it a mature one since this version:

* More file formats to support: This feature only supported ANSI, GBK and Big5 in previous versions. Now it supports more mainstream file formats such as UTF-8, Unicode and Unicode. This means all text formats in general meaning have been supported by this feature.

* Comprehensive status detection: Automatic detection on major text formats – ANSI, GBK, Big5, UTF-8, Unicode and Unicode BE is supported, so before a real character/word count occurs, you will be able to know the code, language, file size and last modification time of the target file.

* Path list and histories: Now, you can keep a list of counted file and folders. Besides, you can set the days before which the statistics of files/folder before can be kept. The maximum number of paths in this list and the days parameter can be set in a corresponding tab in the Options dialog box. You can find recently counted paths directly in the list, and their statistics will be displayed directly. No recounting is necessary.

* Optimization of statistical parameters: Added "Counted" time. If a file or folder has been counted, you can compare the "Counted" time in the statistics with the "last modified" time in status detection message to decide whether a recount is necessary. Besides, notes were added after "Paragraphs" and "Lines". They are now "Paragraphs (natural lines not including blank lines)" and "Lines (natural lines including blank lines)" respectively, so we can have a clearer understanding of these parameters.

* Drag and drop counting and multi-path counting: From now on, you only need to drag paths into the character/word count dialog box to count them. If a path has been counted, you will see a prompt dialog box in which you can choose to display the original data or recount this path. You can also drag multiple paths into the word count dialog box in a time, and they will be counted one after another until everything is OK. When counting is complete, you can check the statistics of all the files and folders counted just now in the path drop-down list.

2. [Function adjustment: Batch Replace] The command Batch Replace was added to the upper and lower "Edit" menus so you can call it conveniently. Originally this feature is accessible only after you open the Find/Replace dialog boxes and enable replace.

3. [Support for non-admin user accounts] Due to the restriction of non-administrator user accounts from accessing many disk files and entries in the Windows Registry, in previous versions, our products were not allowed to run without administrator's permission. To enhance the experience of some users that frequently use non-admin accounts on Windows, from this version on, this product begins to support non-admin users. However, restrictions on non-admin users would not be removed simply because we support this type of user account. Please only operate on files or registry entries you have privilege on. You are still suggested to use our product with a user account with administrative permissions.

4. [Improvement in installation] When updating to a new version, there might be an error prompt that an existing DLL could not be overwritten. This problem has been solved and you will have a smooth update.
5. [Enhanced support for Windows Vista/7] Better compatibility for Windows Vista/7.

6. [Other improvements] Various other improvements and bug fixes.

MLEditor 1.7 (March 2009)

1. [Major and comprehensive update: Professional English Case Conversion] The number of system libraries for proper nouns were expanded to three system libraries and three custom libraries, and there were in-depth expansion of entries and internal rules so as to make this system highly intelligent. Besides, there were many other bug fixes and improvements on this feature.

2. [Important new feature: character count, word count, paragraph count and line counts for English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese (text in edit area)] You can now count characters, words, paragraphs and lines - the same as in Microsoft Word - in File Properties. The key statistics have been meticulously polished to be identical to those by Microsoft Word. Now, even without Word installed on your computer, you can count with MLEditor characters (all/ANSI = file/text size), characters (all/supporting double-byte characters), characters (no spaces), characters (with spaces), words (all), words (single-byte characters), words (double-byte characters), paragraphs and lines. When the code language of the edit area is Simplified Chinese (GBK), the statistics are same as those by Simplified Chinese version of Microsoft Word, while when the code language of the edit area is Traditional Chinese (Big5), the statistics are the same as those by Traditional Chinese version of Microsoft Word. You can also produce a report in pure text by the Text Report button after counting is complete. This function can also be called from under the Tools menu. Statistics for words in English and in Chinese are provided separately. If your text does not contain Chinese or other double-byte characters, the results are the same as those by an English Word.

3. [Important new feature: character count, word count, paragraph count and line count for English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese (for a text file or text files under a folder)] This is a brand new feature you can find from under the Tools menu. You can select a file or a folder on the disk. If you select a file, the file will be counted; if you select a folder, all text files in this folder (including those in all levels of its subfolders) will be counted. MLEditor will detect whether a file is a text file, and based on which, it counts text files and ignores non-text files. The report of statistics includes characters (all/ANSI = file/text size), characters (all/supporting double-byte characters), characters (no spaces), characters (with spaces), words (all), words (single-byte characters), words (double-byte characters), paragraphs and lines for each text file and, at last, their totals. Besides, the language version of each text file (Simplified Chinese - GBK, Traditional Chinese - Big5 and English) will be detected and attached. If a file is in Simplified Chinese or English, the statistics will be the same as those counted by Simplified Chinese version of Microsoft Word, while if a file is in Traditional Chinese, the statistics will be the same as those counted by Traditional Chinese version of Microsoft Word. Statistics for words in English and in Chinese are provided separately. If your text does not contain Chinese or other double-byte characters, the results are the same as those by an English Word.

4. [UI improvement: page cleaning macro] A page cleaning macro is now provided by MLEditor to clean articles in English. It can be called from within the Batch Replace dialog box. The macro can efficiently clean and reorganize messed text into clean text compatible with formal writing conventions in English. The titles and descriptions for this macro were in English only in previous versions. Now we set the page cleaning macro as system macro and place it at the first position on the macro list of the open batch replace macro popup menu. Besides, titles and descriptions for all UI languages are assigned for it. We hope the improvement can help MLEditor users to be aware of the existence of the handy macro and feel comfortable in understanding and using it.

5. [UI improvement: improvements on color settings] As most users are more comfortable with black text in white background, the default color scheme for the software has been changed to black text with white background for both edit areas. Besides, there were in-depth improvements on the Color dialog box. Now there are 4 templates for each edit area (so 8 in total for both areas). The first of the 4 is black text and white background; the second is the default color combination for previous versions of MLEditor for old users to choose from; the third and fourth can be customized. Users can click a color template to quickly assign color scheme to the upper or lower edit area. Besides, the color schemes on the two edit areas and the 8 templates can be copied/pasted from one to another freely.

6. [Important new feature: transparent, draggable main window] You can find this new feature from under the View menu. With this feature, you can set the transparency of the main window (from fully opaque to fully transparent), and can set the main window to be draggable (with a draggable window, except for the active interactive components such as menu bar, command buttons, and edit area(s) with text, you can press the left button of the mouse at any position of the other part of the window, including status bar, blank areas on a toolbar or a blank edit area to drag the main window freely around on the screen). With a semi-transparent window, you can monitor the working of other programs on the screen (such as watching a Flash movie on a video site, waiting for the response of some one while chatting on MSN), and reading or editing relevant text at the same time. This feature also helps you edit information one against another (such as writing down the text on an image) more conveniently. With the new draggability, you can drag MLEditor more conveniently.

7. [Function adding/improvement: Profile Management] Transparency and draggability were added to be part of the profile. Besides, to effectively make use of this new feature, a new system profile "Transparent Sticky Note" was add, which differs with the original "Sticky Note" in that it is a transparent, draggable sticky note. To fully use the text and background color of the lower edit area, the new sticky note uses the lower edit area as its edit area.

8. [Important function improvement: Find/Replace, Batch Replace] There were many important improvements on Find/Replace and Batch Replace. Some old and deeply hidden bugs were dug out and fixed.

9. [Improvements: glossary management wizards] Multiple revises and improvements on the three glossary management wizards - Sort Lines, (Operating) Redundant Lines and Chinese-English Glossary Management - Merge, Split, Swap. For example, progress data is shown on the title bar of the main window during large data operations. Some other minor improvements.

10. [Function update: improvement on Vista compatibility] Multiple compatibility updates for the Vista operating system.

11. [Documentation update] Updated documentation for all the features added or modified in the last one year.

12. [Other improvements] Many other documented or undocumented improvements.

It can help your change the case of an English string or sentence for different purpose (ALL UPPER FORMAT, all lower format, Caption Format and Sentence format) with the cases of proper nouns considered. A typical example is:

NOTE: THERE IS A MICROSOFT WINDOWS ON THE INTEL DOOR. THE WINDOWS IS UPDATING.

note: there is a Microsoft Windows on the Intel door. the Windows is updating.

Note: There Is a Microsoft Windows on the Intel Door. The Windows Is Updating.

Note: There is a Microsoft Windows on the Intel door. The Windows is updating.

2. [UI improvement: added a button to adjust edit area proportion] Added a button on the lower toolbar to adjust edit area proportion. You can click it to open the "Proportion Between Edit Areas" dialog box. Then you can adjust the proportion swiftly and precisely with the Up/Down arrow keys or the Page Up/Page Down keys on your keyboard. When you are satisfied, press the "Return" key to confirm, or press the "Esc" key to cancel.

3. [UI improvement: added an accelerator key] Added an accelerator keys: Adjust Edit Area Proportion (Ctrl+L).

4. [Major function improvement: increased speed for UTF-8-related conversions] Previous versions of MLEditor converted to/from UTF-8 slowly or even seemed to stuck when it was a large file or a large block of text. This issue was fixed in this version, and the conversion speed for big files/text is also fast.

5. [Major function improvement: find/replace/batch replace] In previous versions, Replace All in the find/replace dialog box worked slowly when the text size is huge. The function was optimized in this version, and operates fast except that you choose "Match whole word", which requires more time for its complexity. Multiple other updates on these two modules.

6. [Important new function: Batch Replace - Page Cleaning] An "English page cleaning" macro is included in the installation pack. You can use the pack in the drop-down menu by clicking the "Open" button in "Find/Replace" (dialog box) -> "Batch Replace" (dialog box). Running the page cleaning macro on an English page can help you clean and normalize punctuations, spaces, tabs, line breaks under standard language/page conventions promptly.

7. [Major function update: improvement on Vista compatibility] Multiple compatibility updates for the Vista operating system. Some were fixed, others, which cannot be fixed due to Vista's special nature, are prompted with instructions and alternatives when they appear.

8. [License change] Now we change our update policy to be free updated for 2 years.

9. [Updates: glossary management wizards] Multiple updates and improvements on the three glossary management wizards - Sort Lines, (Operating) Redundant Lines and Chinese-English Glossary Management - Merge, Split, Swap.

10. [UI modification: UI improvements] Multiple other revisions and improvements on the program's UI.

11. [Document/web page update] Document/web page updates.

12. [Updates: product updates] New version auto-detection and download is supported in our past versions. Now we change it into an option, so a user fond of and fairly experienced in some specific version can keep using that specific version without being prompted day and day to update when a newer version is available. Fixed the bug that sometimes the Download Now button is not enabled properly.

13. Multiple other bug fixes, updates and improvements.

You can, in one click, perform a series of replace operation for unlimited number of find/replace pairs in predefined order. You can set four independent options for each pair - Apply, Match Whole Word, Match Case, and Use Special Characters. You can save each batch replace configuration to a batch file for long term use.

2. [Major new function: tool] Three important glossary related wizards are now under the Tools menu - Sort Lines, (Operating) Redundant Lines and Oriental Language-English Glossary Management - Merge, Split, Swap. Try them for details by yourself.

3. [New function: translation links] MLEditor is not a translator by itself. To help our users with relevant requirements, we added the Translation menu, and provided links to web sites providing free machine translation services (text translation, web page translation and online dictionaries), professional Simplified Chinese - Traditional Chinese conversion and professional human translation. The users can click to visit corresponding web sites.

4. [Update: code conversion options - optional conversion for file paths during site conversion] The original setting is optional conversion between GBK and Big5 for the full paths. Now we have changed it to convert the relative paths only. And there are three options now: No conversion, conversion between GBK Simplified Chinese and GBK Traditional Chinese, and conversion between GBK and Big5.

5. [Bug fix: code conversion - file/site conversion] Fixed the bug that site options appear when the dialog starts with target as a file instead of a site.

5. Some other bug fixes and improvements in program, UI and menu.

MLEditor 1.3.4 (February 2005)

1. Now user can open current document by an external program. This is a function similar to "Preview" in a web page editor, or "Run" in a software development tool. You can open current document by the default program associated with its file type by pressing F5, or open it by a custom program by pressing Ctrl+F5. So after you have modified a web page in MLEditor, you can press F5 to preview the result in your default web browser.

2. When MLEditor found some language pack should be installed, it will no longer download the language pack from web site, but call the operating system directly to install required language pack.

3. The starting procedure has been optimized. You can open MLEditor faster than previous editions.

4. We have compressed the installation pack, so it has been smaller, suitable for fast downloading.

5. We have moved our product homepage to http://www.speedy7.com/mleditor/index.html.

MLEditor 1.3.3 (January 2005)

1. Some minor bug fixes, improvements and refinements on program and documentation.

MLEditor 1.3.1 (November 2004)

1. Some refinements in documentations and program.

MLEditor 1.3 (November 2004)

1. Announcement of a new GBK/Big5 conversion expert program - STGuru - based on MLEditor. All users who bought MLEditor before the release of STGuru will be granted one or two FREE STGuru licenses. STGuru was specially designed for full series of Simplified Chinese / Traditional Chinese conversion. It's also a convenient Chinese text editor. This new program just received 4 cows at Tucows. Based on our development plan, STGuru will be responsible for leading-edge Simplified Chinese / Traditional Chinese in the future, while MLEditor will be developed into an all-purpose professional multi-language text editor. Since the GBK/Big5 conversion engine of MLEditor is already strong, if you feel satisfied with this product, you can just use it to for your GBK/Big5 conversion. However, if your major purpose in using this editor is for professional quality Simplified Chinese / Traditional Chinese conversion, you are advised to change to STGuru.

All users who bought MLEditor before the release of STGuru (October 2004) will be granted 1-2 (MLEditor Personal License) or 2-3 (MLEditor Business License) FREE STGuru licenses depends on your license and your requirements. If you are among this group of registered users and still haven't received our offer, you are welcome to contact us now for your free STGuru license.

2. Full series of Unicode-related clipboard conversions:

MLEditor is an ANSI based program. If you meet "???" under XP or NT/2000 systems while copying text into MLEditor, the data you coped is mostly Unicode data. Now you can use the series of Unicode-related conversion functions to conversion from and to Unicode conveniently.

2.1 The all-purpose Clipboard Unicode Conversion Show - conversions between Unicode/Unicode BE and ANSI (in any languages)/UTF-8

2.2 Fluent conversion between Unicode and ANSI text in current source/destination text/languages. 3 pairs of most often used ANSI-Unicode conversions related to current source/destination text or languages are provided for convenient use. Accelerator keys are provided for these 6 most-often-used commands.

Ctrl+Shift+S / Ctrl+Shift+D : Selection/Text in Source/Destination area ->Unicode

Ctrl+Shift+U / Ctrl+Shift+C : ANSI (Source/Destination language)-> Unicode

Ctrl+Shift+A / Ctrl+Shift+N : Unicode -> ANSI (Source/Destination language)

3. Increased loading speed for non-embedded language UI. Now the loading speed for resources in a non-embedded language is several times faster than before, and can be acceptable for most people than previous versions. This is a good start for us to add new UI languages to MLEditor in the coming future.

4. User Data Directory support. User will be advised to save all important user data files under the new User Data Directory, which is outside of the installation directory of the product. So important user data can be kept during product update or after the product was uninstalled.

5. Many minor improvement and bug fixes for the GBK/Big5 conversion engine

5.1 Two accelerator keys added for the edit area conversion between GBK Simplified Chinese and GBK Traditional Chinese (Ctrl+Shift+F, Ctrl+Shift+J).

5.2 Two new elements were introduced and saved in a word adjustment pack - pack directory and GBK/Big5 direction. The pack directory was automatically set as the parent directory of a pack. Now when you copy a pack folder to another place, all custom final fix libraries within the directory can still be recognized after the move. The GBK/Big5 direction of save as part of a pack and remember next time you open it.

5.3 You can now change apply/not apply flag for a library by right-button context menu within the main word adjustment dialog box, rather than changing it only after you opened a dialog box.

5.4. Various bug fixes and refinements for the engine, such as fix for the problem sometimes it won't work or crashes when you are moving down or up a library, or when editing a pack; the title is not correctly when you are doing a GBK S-T conversion, etc.

6. Special characters support and other improvements on find and replace functions:

6.1 Special Characters support - Now user can use some special characters in a find or replace operation by applying the option of "Use Special Characters" in the find/replace dialog. Now you can use Windows carriage return (^p), a UNIX carriage return (^n), tabular character (^t) or any ASCII characters (1-255) in Decimal or Hexadecimal format within your find and replace operations. Please read Find and Replace in User's Guide for details.

6.2 Other bug Fixes and refinements for find-next related operations.

7. A specialized file properties dialog and better controls on file with read-only/hidden/system attributes:

A specialized file properties dialog box has been used. So the information can be neat in the new dialog. In addition, you can read and modify the read-only/hidden/system/archive properties of current file on this dialog box.

Usually a read-only/hidden/system file is protected by the operating system from being changed, now after you have modified a read-only/hidden/system file by MLEditor, you will be prompted and have a choice to save changes to this file.

8. Fixes for some bugs related to accelerator key operations. Many other bug fixes and refinements in program and UI.

9. Improvement and update on documentations.

3) Several important improvements in word adjustment engine - under current conversion engine, you can easily complete a conversion task at perfect quality by assigning and maintaining a word adjustment pack for each of your important conversion task. In addition, this engine works more conveniently than before.

   a) Now a word adjustment pack management system is available. User can save current configuration of the word adjustment library list with a suitable pack name, user can add, delete, modify the word adjustment pack, and can conveniently apply a pack whenever he/she want. This system will be very helpful when you have more than one tasks of code conversion between Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese with different conversion requirements

   b) The number of system word adjustment libraries increased from 3 to 6 (Base Lib + 2 PDAF Libs + 3 Final Fix Libs).

   c) User can add at most 3 custom final fix libraries after the system final fix libraries.

   d) Word search in the library list - You can now search a word in all libraries, or in all applied libraries, or in any specified library in a centralized search UI.

   e) Path history record list in file/site conversion dialog - now any source or destination path used in past conversions will be recorded down in the source/destination path history list, when you are repeating a conversion task, you can select source or destination path from the corresponding path history list, rather than type the whole path again.

   f) Word adjustment libraries were adjusted and refined under the new word adjustment library structure.

4) Help in chm format - Help documentations were packed into a chm format help file, so the total size of documentations has been smaller, while help can be opened faster.

5) Besides original vendors, user can now also order MLEditor through RegNow.

6) Bug fixes and refinement in program, as well as refinement in UI, local documentations and MLEditor web pages, so user can use this product more conveniently and more comfortably.

MLPad 1.1 Beta 2.1 (January 2004)

1. Refinement for MLPad 1.1 Beta 2 - many minor bug fixes and refinement.

2. License of MLPad broken down - now license of MLPad was broken down into Personal License and Business License. Personal License is just the original license before this change. Business License provides more choices for business users.

MLPad 1.1 Beta 2 (December 2003)

1. Auto-detect and download for required language support components - now there is no need for user to worry if a language component is available on his/her operating system. MLPad will automatically detect whether a required language component is available, and download and install necessary language supporting packs.

2. Adjustment of installation packs - since above technique is available, Full Edition lf MLPad is not as useful as before. Anasoft has stopped releasing Full Edition of MLPad since this build. But more choices are available in the download of language packs (for users without daily network connection). In addition, a lighter new edition - MLPad.net (see below) was now available for fast download.

3. High precision code recognition for Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese - this was the first part of MLPad code recognition plan. When you open a file in Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese, MLPad will automatically change display language to corresponding languages. The technique has also been integrated in code conversion, so code conversion procedure can be more intelligent. Code recognition for other major languages will be available in later builds.

4. Several important improvement in code conversion engine: Since this build, the whole effect and most major aspects of MLPad code conversion engine have been leading the line, it will be further improved in the future editions until it's perfect.

4.1 GBK support - Previous build of MLPad only support GB2312 table, this version began to support the big GBK table.

4.2 Leading high precision GBK/GB2312/Big5 code conversion core - countless efforts were spent on improving the code conversion core. Now according to our internal test, the precision in code conversion for each of the 3 major tables by MLPad has been the most precise of its kind.

4.3 Intelligent word adjustment - intelligent word adjustment engine was available, so code conversion for articles could be much more precise and nature. Now many files can be converted with perfect result - 0 error.

4.4 Code conversion between "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese" within the big GBK table - when converting text using Edit Area Conversion function, in addition to conversion between GBK and Big5 text, user can also choose to convert between "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese" within GBK table.

4.5 Conversion speed is highly improved - it will only cost about 2 minutes to convert a big directory of 40 MB, including hundreds of files, while high precision is still assured (the duration depends on your computer speed and number of items in your word adjustment libraries).

5. "Exit All" - user can exit all opening MLPads in the Windows. This command was placed under the File(S) submenu.

6. "Check Text Difference" - this function under "Tools" submenu can help user check difference of text in the source and destination edit area line by line.

7. More files on MRU (most recently used) file list - for both source and destination edit area, user can open at most 60 (default is 20) recently opened files from the most recent file list under respective sub menu.

8. Help center for new version of MLPad was finally finished - user can press F1 at any place to go to respective help topic in the help center. This was a 3-language version help center - English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. A copy of the whole help center was placed online at Anasoft Studio (http://www.speedy7.com/mlpad/help) to be used by MLPad.net users.
